The Mid-Autumn Festival is an important traditional Chinese festival. It originally celebrates the autmn harvest, nowadays focuses on family unity. Members of the family will gather to spend the night together with mooncakes, fruits and lanterns. People can enjoy the view of the moon as it will be bright and round on the date of the festival, which is on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month of the Chinese calendar.
The Fire Dragon Dance in Tai Hang 大坑 on Hong Kong Island began as an activity to expel evil spirits in the once farming village. The community of Tai Hang organises the dance as a three-day performance ever year during the Mid-Autmn Festival, which lasts since 1880. Tai Hang, though has long become a modern residental part of the city, still holds on to its century-old traditions, and it is as lively, cheerful and energetic as ever.
